Miracast: How to enable Miracast in Windows 10

Miracast is one of the technologies for wirelessly transmitting images and sound to a TV or monitor. It is easy to use. Many devices support miracast, including computers and laptops with Windows 10, with the appropriate Wi-Fi adapter.

This manual describes how to enable Miracast in Windows 10 to connect your TV as a wireless monitor. As well as the reasons why such a connection fails and how to fix them. Please note that you can use your computer or laptop with Windows 10 as a wireless monitor.

Connecting to a TV or wireless monitor by Miracast

In order to turn on Miracast and transfer the image to the TV via Wi-Fi in Windows 10, it is enough to press the Win + P keys. Where Win is the key with the Windows logo and P is Latin letter.

At the bottom is the list of options for projecting a display. Select “Connect to a wireless display” (for information on what to do if there is no such item, see below).

Miracast

The search for wireless displays (monitors, televisions and so on) begins. Once the desired screen is found, select it in the list. Note that for most TVs, you must first turn them on.

Miracast

After selecting, the connection will start for transmission via Miracast (it may take some time). Then, if everything went smoothly, you will see a monitor image on your TV or other wireless display.

If Miracast does not work in Windows 10

Despite the simplicity of the necessary actions to enable Miracast, often not everything works as expected. Next – possible problems with connecting wireless monitors and ways to eliminate them.

The device does not support Miracast

If the item “Connect to a wireless display” is not displayed, then usually it says one of two things:

  • An existing Wi-Fi adapter does not support Miracast.
  • Missing required Wi-Fi adapter drivers.

The second sign that the matter in one of these two points is the display of the message “The PC or mobile device does not support Miracast. So it can’t project wirelessly.”

Miracast

If your laptop, monoblock or computer with a Wi-Fi adapter was released before 2012-2013, we can assume that it is in the absence of support for Miracast (but not necessarily). If they are newer, then it is more likely to deal with the drivers of the wireless network adapter.

In this case, the main and only recommendation is to go to the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop, all-in-one or perhaps a separate Wi-Fi adapter (if you purchased it for a PC). Download the official WLAN (Wi-Fi) drivers from there and install them. By the way, if you did not manually install the chip set drivers, they should also be installed from the official site.

At the same time, even if there are no official drivers for Windows 10, you should try the ones presented for versions 8.1, 8 or 7. Miracast can also earn money on them.

Cannot connect to TV (wireless display)

The second common situation is that the search for wireless displays in Windows 10 works. But after selecting, Miracast connects to the TV for a long time. After which you see a message that the connection failed.

In this situation, installing the latest official drivers on the Wi-Fi adapter can help (as described above, be sure to try). But, unfortunately, not always.

And for this case I don’t have clear solutions, there are only observations: this problem most often occurs on laptops and monoblocks with Intel 2nd and 3rd generation processors. That is, not on the newest hardware (respectively, used in these devices Wi -Fi adapters are also not the latest). It also happens that on these devices the Miracast connection works for some TVs and does not work for others.

From this I can only make an assumption. The problem with connecting to wireless displays in this case may be caused by the incomplete support of the more used in Windows 10. Or it is from the TV version of the Miracast technology (or some nuances of this technology) from older equipment. Another option is incorrect operation of this equipment in Windows 10 (if, for example, in 8 and 8.1, Miracast was turned on without problems). If your task is to watch movies from a computer on the TV, then you can configure DLNA in Windows 10. This should work.

That’s all I can offer at the current time. If you have or had problems with the work of Miracast to connect to the TV – share in the comments both the problems and possible solutions.
